  • Apologies in advance to those who want the political to remain in the News thread. Spoiler alert: Skip this if that applies to you.

I'd embed these YouTube links, but I can't get it to work. I'm sure that will be part of the message board upgrade that I started paying for 2+ years ago, LOL.

For the last week I've been listening to a hell of a lot of MC5, Rage Against the Machine, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, and Run the Jewels, so that might give you an idea of where my head's at.

I can't think of anything more appropriate right now than Clutch's awesome Creedence cover of Fortunate Son:

Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord
    It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh

Unless it's this song from the new Run the Jewels record that dropped yesterday:

And every day on evening news they feed you fear for free
And you so numb you watch the cops choke out a man like me
And 'til my voice goes from a shriek to whisper, "I can't breathe"
And you sit there in the house on couch and watch it on TV
The most you give's a Twitter rant and call it a tragedy
But truly the travesty, you've been robbed of your empathy

    • Level 42 - The Chant Has Begun
      + YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

      Why is love so rare
      All this talk of warfare
      Voices raised in anger
      They don't have an answer
      Pass the word along
      We can wait no longer
      Too much blind destruction
      Follow love's instructions
      Now the chant has begun

Make your choice, there's no escape
Add your voice, the chant has begun

Love me some Tool. Their combination of hard, progressive, and space rock is such a delicious treat for my ears (and mind).

Here's one of my favorite sequences, with singer/writer Maynard writing about his deceased mother. It's got that old classic/progressive rock build-up, like a Pink Floyd song from '71. She was a devote religious person, a polar opposite to Maynard's irreverent, profane, and obscene art but here he gives her credit for her rigorous adherence to her principles. It's quite sad actually. In previous work related to his mother he was very angry about God inflicting her with many terrible maladies, an insult after her devotion to him (Him?).

Maynard's other side projects are good too, A Perfect Circle (alt-rock) and Puscifer (hard to describe 'rock'/techno?).

Here's my favorite Puscifer song. (Featuring a cameo by WaiverWire, playing the role of ex-military? )

The aforementioned 'angry' song about his Mom and God, while with A Perfect Circle.
