    • Police, in a place like Kenosha, aren’t underpaid. They start at $50,000 a year plus the opportunity to work a ton of overtime. They go up to $90,000 a year plus overtime. You are going to pay a cop $200,000 a year? Given that every penny of property taxes in Sarasota goes to the Police, You would, literally have to double property taxes to double salaries. Think the public and the legislature are going to let a local government do that?

WW will know better than I, but if I was fired for committing a crime, I lost my pension. I’m sure it’s the same for a police officer.

Police don’t hire bad cops because they are afraid of losing them. That’s nonsense. While not required, about half of new hires have a degree. Cities do compensation studies to establish salaries. They look at what other governments pay. I never heard of people going between departments for better pay. For one thing, they would have to start over on the compensation scale and unless they are in the state retirement system, would have to start over on their pension.

        • Trump does a photo op with the owner of Rode’s Camera Shop which was burned to the ground in Kenosha. The owner holds a picture of the business that was in existence for more than 100 years.

"I just appreciate President Trump coming today — everybody here does," Rode said. "We're so thankful we got the federal troops here. Once they got here things did calm down quite a bit."

A couple problems. It wasn’t federal troops that were called in, it was the National Guard. The National Guard are deployed by the Governor, not the President.

The other problem? Rode sold the business 8 years ago and no longer owns it. The actual owner refused to participate. “I think everything he does turns into a circus, and I just didn't want to be involved in it,"

So if you can’t get the real owner, find an actor to play him.

          • Down to 3 points in Pennsylvania.

538 average polling has Biden up 7.1%. Today’s “a” polls had him up nationally between 5 and 8 points.

Monmouth has Biden behind in Ohio. Morning Consult has Biden up 4.3% in Florida.

True that Rhodes no longer owns this business, but he still owns the land and the building.

Key is that they have to be charged with a crime. If you are fired you do lose your pension. The State of Florida Police Standards can also void your state certification which makes it nearly impossible to be hired by an out of state agency.

"He might've gotten in the car or run somebody over." Or, equally as plausible, he might've just gotten in the car and just driven away to a family member or friend's house safely. The standard needs to be a helluva lot higher to take a man's life or paralyze him from the waist down for the rest of his days.
We should all be so thankful that you never went into law enforcement as I see from this post you are ok if he had gotten in the vehicle and fled with the kids in the car.

I found it so pete like that you have failed to even mention he had a confirmed warrant for sexual battery. Wonder what happened to the #metoo movement.

What about the officers who "step down" in place of a firing? Do their certifications ever come up for review or does stepping down instead of being fired keep that from happening?

Honestly curious because the local PD where I grew up would get one or two new cops a year that were essentially fired but without the official paperwork from larger departments in the surrounding areas.

You act like there are only 2 options. There were a number of other options that didn’t require him to be shot in the back when there was no eminent threat to the officer or the passengers. And that’s still the standard in law enforcement - an eminent threat, isn’t it?

Nobody ever said he was a saint. The warrant was for an allegation by the mother of his children that he engaged in a sexual assault on her. You know, the same thing Ivana Trump said that the President did to her in a sworn deposition.

Last time I checked he wasn’t shot in the back 7 times for driving off with his children.

So is the new standard that when a poor, black guy that can’t afford a thousand dollar an hour lawyer could possibly do something, it’s ok for the cops to shoot him in the back, but when a rich, white guy does it, the police union endorses him to be President?

If he was the owner of the building, why not just say it? That would have made the point. Instead, Trump had to embellish the situation, just like he did taking credit for the National Guard, which are under the command of the governor. But that’s Trump. He’s a pathological liar with, in my opinion, a severe mental illness.

                          Sig worthy

ps - The racist cop you are talking to is one of those racists who doesn’t think he’s a racist. That’s bad enough, but even worse when they wield badges.

You know, it's fine to whine about the state of the police force in this country. Ok, some of you are really good at that. At some point though I'd like some actionable items suggested. Something that doesn't support anarchy and upholds the law fairly. We all agree that there is a problem, but if the extent of the discussion is to wait until the next black man is shot in the back and how officers need to be thrown in jail as the means to hold them and other officers accountable, than it's a pretty damn useless discussion. That is what is happening now. At least Zeyk when he was here brought up the idea of a communal-esque system of policing that was interesting enough to have a thought experiment about. Not sure if it would actually work, but it's a fundamental change that doesn't sabotage the goal of policing a community.

My doubling of salary suggestion was just a number I was throwing out there and not based on financial logic. My point is simply that efforts should be made to change the type and quality of person that enters the force. Increasing the salary is a simple way of increasing the size of the candidate pool, which will allow for the tougher standards that need to be implemented.
If no government system will guarantee a utopia, then our best choice is to look for the least exploitive one

                              • So you do not think that someone who just fought with 3 officers, had one in a head lock, is running to their car with a knife and who was getting into a car with that knife.....and with children in that car is not an eminent threat?

If not, if those were your children would you still think the same?
