  • Godwin back on the franchise tag and Lavonte extended two years. Hopefully we can get Shaq back.

I'm surprised they snagged Lavonte before Shaq, but I'm happy to have at least two guys back

      • Lavonte obviously made it an easier negotiation. Very team friendly. So glad he’s likely a Buc for life.

Reading the tea leaves would indicate the team has confidence it can reach a deal with Shaq. I doubt they’d franchise Godwin if they didn’t.

Lavonte’s deal is a big step towards bringing the entire core of key free agents back. Getting his cap hit down about $7 million from 10-3 is terrific. And there’s no doubt he could’ve gotten more than the AAV of $12.5 million had he chosen to test the market. He really gave us a hometown discount, and now the rest of the NFL is quaking in their cleats at the thought of the Bucs coming back virtually intact.

        • I was a bit skeptical, but it really looks like they will be able to bring back all the big pieces. Shaq back on a long-term deal, and they brought back Gronk on a 1 year deal. Hopefully we can get Succop and Suh back. Anything beyond that with AB and/or Fournette would just be a bonus.

          • Barret with the team friendly deal, and none of this would have happened if not for Brady

            • Everyone is chipping in a bit. Agree with Schmitz that we really need Suh and Succop. Brown would be gravy. Not sure I trust his better angels for another full year. Cray cray is hard to fully keep in check for that long. Certainly can’t imagine them paying more than a couple million for the privilege of taking that risk. Plus, it’d be best for the team if Tyler Johnson and/or Scotty Miller commanded more playing time and weren’t blocked by an aging veteran. BUT ... whatever Tommy wants, Tommy gets. And AB deserves some credit for being on his best behavior. So far.

I feel similarly about Fournette for different reasons. He doesn’t have legal issues and he’s not old, but I’m betting the Bucs will draft a RB with one of their top 3 picks, so Fournette would block that kid’s development, which is important since RoJo could very well be an unrestricted free agent in one year. Also, if we’re gonna spend $3-4 million on a RB, I’d kinda prefer James White with his great hands and years of experience with Brady. Bucs have talked to the agents for both.

              • I haven't heard much about White until this offseason, hope we can get him, seems to check all of the right boxes

                • It’s draft week! Always a favorite for us amateur GMs.

Bucs have no urgent needs, which is incredibly rare and amazing to say. But we’ve got a few roles available that will grow in importance as soon as next year when some starters get older and/or more expensive. I’d rank them in order of importance:

DT - Suh is getting older and isn’t cheap.
Edge - Same for JPP, plus we could use a better 3rd pass rusher.
Interior OL - Jensen is 30 and rather expensive. He and Cappa will be free agents next spring. I don’t see Jensen leaving as long as Brady plays (they love each other and center is a very important position). But a versatile IOL could back up both spots this year, start at guard next year and possibly start at center when Brady retires. Lot of sneaky value there, short and long term.
CB - Carlton Davis will be a free agent next year and will likely look to get paid like a No. 1 corner. Not sure he’s worth that kind of salary. Our other two young corners are also somewhat unproven and inconsistent, plus we need a depth/developmental guy who has the speed to be a special teams standout.
S - Whitehead will be a free agent next year, and we could use a depth/developmental guy this year as a No. 4.
RB - Everyone but Vaughn will be a free agent next year, but there might not be any carries available this year.
TE - Gronk and Howard will be free agents next year. Brate is aging and could be traded or cut this summer in order to free up cap space. Bucs like their fringe, depth guys, but this might be something of an overlooked need next year.
DE - In Todd Bowles’ defense this is a lunch pail, run-stuffing position not worth addressing early. Gholston is a very solid starter here, but he’s an aging free agent who might not be worth a significant salary next year.
OT - Smith won’t have guaranteed money next season, so it might be tempting to cut him and move Wirfs to LT for cap reasons. But teams rarely get rid of good, young LTs like Smith. Still could use a swing tackle for depth and to play in jumbo packages this season.
WR - Godwin will either be re-signed, tagged again (doubtful) or allowed to walk as a free agent next year. Evans would be entering his 9th season. Hard to know the future here, but Bucs have solid depth.
LB - No real need until maybe 2023.
                  QB - Don't bother.
Specialists - Licht is not allowed to draft these anymore, but a late-round kick returner would be a nice exception to that rule.

So here’s the problem: We pick at the bottom of each round, and in my opinion this draft pool absolutely sucks for defensive linemen. I don’t see a single sure-fire prospect. Where this draft is deep is all over the OL, which doesn’t happen all that often. This class has some good corners at the top and the usual suspect prospects once you hit the third round. Same with RBs. There’s not much beyond the top 3 guys, and none of them are first-round worthy either IMHO. Like several recent years, there are plenty of intriguing WR prospects ... throw a dart. Good TEs and safeties always seem to be in short supply. And finally, don’t fool yourself about a QB. Not happening. You’d have to see a Justin Fields first-round prospect fall into the second round before the Bucs would even bat an eyelash. Why? Because when you’re all-in with Tom Brady there is no tomorrow. Any and all assets go towards winning now.

So, if I’m Jason Licht I bust out the old Patriots blueprint and trade baby trade! Move out of the 1st. Move up with your second and/or third. Use your 4th-7th rounders to maneuver. Who cares about lower-leve draft prospects when you’re a glamor team that only has room for a handful of quality rookies?

Here are some prospects I would go after:

Round 2 - Big, long, super-fast CB Tyson Campbell or Eric Stokes

2 - Versatile OT Alex Leatherwood or Jaylen Mayfield, who both might be better at guard

3 - Massive, talented DE Dare Odeyingbo

3 - Edge Quincy Roche, who isn’t big on tangibles but was very productive

4 - Big, scrappy IOL Robert Hainsey, who can play G and C

5 - Developmental WR Shi Smith or Tylan Wallace

6 - Depth RB Kylin Hill

7 - Speedy KR Avery Williams

                  • I tend to agree about moving back. Teams value that 5th year option so I'm sure a couple teams will be calling to move up.

I'm interested in seeing if any of the high upside guys with injury red flags drop down. Phillips, the edge from Miami and Farley, the corner from Virginia Tech are both arguably the best at their positions but have extensive injury histories.

                    • I know it’s sacrilegious to say this at the NFL draft but take BPA. I think our secondary is our weakest area

Exactly why I mocked our first pick there.

I would love LOVE either of those dudes, but even if they fall it’s hard to imagine them falling to 32. They’re not perfect prospects, of course, and the risks they come with wouldn’t entice me to give up an asset to move up and get em.

If Farley fell all the way to the bottom of the first it would be strictly because of his medicals after back surgery. And if that many teams passed on him for that reason, I’d be having a hard conversation with my doctors. It’s never good when a top-10 talent drops out of the first round. Darius Guice comes to mind, and he was out of the league within a year if I’m not mistaken. Everything seems to be in order with his medicals, though, so I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go in the 15-25 range.

Phillips is another tough eval, which exemplifies this entire edge class. His injury history is scary, he’s walked away from the game before, and he went far enough down the road of being a rapper/producer that no one can guarantee what his future holds. He could be absolutely dominant. He is clearly the best physical prospect with the best most recent game film. But one more pop in the head could end him. Tough. If he’s there and his intangibles (character, love of the game, etc.) check out I would take that gamble in a heartbeat. That’s how good he could be. But he’s a scary dude in more ways than one.

The two Georgia CBs look like a great fit and one or both could very well be available.
