  • 1/26- River Rats at Admirals

Denis blows a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes and a 3-2 lead with 28 seconds left. Ads lose in OT. Barf. I'd rather they start Boutin as much as possible.

The new guys are really doing well and Smolenak, Henrich, and Keller seem to be on rolls. If they could just get Jones going.

So much for him getting his confidence back so that we could even entertain the idea of someone claiming him.

I like Denis as a person - seems upbeat and competitive and accountable - but my gosh. What a disaster.

And another contract year after this one.

They could buy him out for a financial penalty, but then again could Denis be the vet to go with Helenius in NF next year? (Koshechkin being the wild card here).

I think Denis is actually giving Norfolk a bit of leadership overall and he probably has helped Boutin with his preparation and approach.

The problem is he just isn't capable of winning games right now at the AHL level, and Helenius isn't going to step in and be ready to split starts right off the bat IMO. I think what needs to happen is Denis needs to be bought out and the Lightning need to go get someone like Leighton who the Ads fans have some experience with (to help sell tickets and raise morale).

I have soured on Koshechkin because I'm thinking what happened to Denis in Tampa is somewhat what happened to Koshechkin in Kazan. The guy just might not be cut out to play for a team that doesn't run the trap exclusively.

That's why I think the Lightning need to look at grabbing another goaltender in the third round in this year's draft.

I'm interested to see what happens now with Jonathan Boutin. Loiselle really soured on him earlier in the year but, IMO, he's never been behind a team that was worth a damn so it's not entirely fair to judge him because he hasn't been able to be supernatural like Ramo. He's got a > .900 save percentage on a bad, bad team and I hope they bring him back next season.

          Boutin

Sign Boutin for one more year for depth to give him a chance, but what I saw of him last season and this season in person didn't impress me enough to think he could play in the NHL.
After one viewing, I could see Ramo would be an NHL player.

Hard to know what they'll do, but unless they really want to get a No. 1 goalie like Khabi, I think you're looking at Ramo-veteran backup in Tampa and Boutin-Helenius in Norfolk.

More like veteran goaltender+Ramo tandem in Tampa and veteran goaltender+Helenius backup in Norfolk, IMO.

              One More Year

I think they should keep Boutin for at least one more year to work with Helenius when he comes up. He has played well at times behind a shaky defense. But his numbers aren't that bad.

Denis is too expensive to be a mentor next year in Norfolk, despite the attributes mentioned here.

But as a Norfolk fan, I am most pleased how well the whole team has picked up their game. They play hard the entire game now, they don't let losing a lead completely deflate them like before. They are really laying the body on people. Stirling and Rumble have switched responsibilities with Rumble taking over the offense.

The addition of Lessard and Szcezehura has been a real shot in the arm for us. Szcezehura has been a big and happy surprise. Smolenak is playing much better and has assumed somewhat of an agitator role. Got into another fight last night and didn't do badly. Leach has taken Rogers under his wing and mentored him and now you can see improvement in Roger's game as well.

Are we going to make the playoffs, and the answer is no. But I hope this improvement will continue for the balance of the season to give us something good to build on next year.

All in all, things are on the upswing in Norfolk.

                Good to hear on Rogers
Lessard should get a shot in Tampa.
I noticed on the Lightning website that Jancevski was still listed. Was that just a loan trade for Scalzo or a real trade? Is Scalzo showing anything or his just another Schneider/Delmore?

Sometimes TBL.com is slow with the roster updates. That was announced as a "real" trade and they thought Scalzo could be an NHLer one day.

                  Unlikely, IMO.

                    Trades

Scalzo was brought over in an earlier trade for Bryce Lampman. Jancevski was traded straight up for Lessard, no loan. Szcezcehura was brought over for "future considerations". Szcezehura has really blossomed here, has put up good numbers for us. So far a real steal for us. Lessard has come on recently and is playing on the special teams as well. He is showing some on ice leadership in helping to direct things. If he attracts the attention of the Bolts, at least send us Darche back to fill the void.

Scalzo is a speedy skater. He needs to work on his decision making in moving the puck out of his zone. But he likes to hit despite his size. He is a better player than Schneider and I haven't seen Delmore play so I can make no comparison there.

Yeah, I could see John Tortorella jumping over the bench and strangling Scalzo to death if he were to get a callup right now and start turning the puck over like he does.

O yeah. Scalzo was for Lampman. Guess the TBL.com folks are just a bit slow in dumping Jancevski off the roster.

                          all-stars

I got the AHL all-star game on now to watch Keller. Nice to see him make some progress this season although his numbers aren't huge.
By the way "Relive the Magic" is on NHL network at 8 p.m. if anyone hasn't seen it or taped it yet.
